Medical Definition of Referral
The term "referral" can refer both to the act of sending you to another doctor
or therapist, and to the actual paperwork to authorize that visit.
A referral is usually necessary to see any practitioner or specialist other than your primary care physician (PCP).

The referral department will schedule initial consultation and provide appointment details to the patient.
Consultation

The referral is obtained from the PCP, who may require a telephone or office consultation first.

The Dr. will document the specialist request and the referral department will process it according to patients IPA.

Authorization Approval
Once the authorization is approved, the referral department will send documentation to specialist office. (This process could take up to 5 -7 business days)
